💡✍️ADN #142: The Next Time You Hear Someone Say

artist development artist development newsletter artist development tips creative writing lyrics Aug 03, 2025

I was having coffee this week with a friend and sometimes co-writer.

We were catching up and talking about our families, kids, and what’s been going on in our musical lives.

There were three times during our conversation when she or I caught each other saying something that sounded like a line in a song.

The first time I said, “That sounds like a song.”

Fifteen minutes went by, and I’d already forgotten what was said.

The next time I said, “That sounds like a song, too… You should write that down.”

The third time it happened, we both heard it, and we started following what was said and rattling off more lines.

In 20 seconds, we had a sketch of a chorus lyric.

The next time we get together to write, we’ve got a great starting point.

My point?

Songs are all around us.

You just have to listen for them.

Keep your antenna tuned to the wavelength of songs, and songs will show up.

When the ideas appear, try to take them as far as possible in that moment of inspiration.

You’ll never get that moment back.

That first idea I heard the other day may have been something special, but to be honest, I can’t remember.

Always try to embrace those little moments and lean into them.

You can always edit later.

See you next Sunday,

Neil
