💡✍️ADN #147: Hit Record = Hit Record

How did your brain read that?

Did you see hit record and picture a platinum plaque?

Or did you see hit record as pressing the button to capture an idea?

Most people imagine the outcome, but don’t understand the effort.

You don’t get the hit without hitting record first.

“Iteration leads to adulation.”

Here’s what “hitting record” looks like:

  • Voice memos of half-formed hooks in the middle of a work shift or the middle of the night.
  • Throwaway demos no one will ever hear.
  • Filming yourself playing a song online, even when you’re not sure it’s any good.
  • Recording and deleting. Recording and replacing. Recording and finally keeping.

Every classic you love started this way.

They rarely feel like divine inspiration.

Typically, they come from work ethic and iteration.

Hitting record is an act of humility.

It says:

“I don’t have the answer yet, but I’m on the hunt.”

The artists who last aren’t the ones waiting for lightning to strike.

They’re the ones stacking small sparks until they turn into fire.

A hit record is more than a miracle.

It’s the receipt of all the times you pressed record when it didn’t matter to anyone but you.

So the next time you’re wondering how to get your break, stop staring at the charts.

Hit record.

On your phone.

In the studio.

Onstage.

Online.

Hit record until the world hears your hit record.

See you next Sunday,
Neil
