💡✍️ADN #069: Be The Conductor

Mar 17, 2024

Yesterday, I sat on a porch swing in New Braunfels, TX., and watched as my 3-year-old daughter brought me, my wife, and her aunt into the front yard.

She announced we were starting a band.

The oooolalalouella’s. (Or something like that.)

She picked up a stick off the ground, broke it in half, and suddenly, she was the drummer and conductor.

She pointed to the wind chime and told me to play.

She handed her aunt two leaves, and my wife was left to sing and dance.

“1,2,3,4, shake your booty,” she sang.

This went on for about 30 minutes, count off after count off, song after song, until her friend arrived, at which point she was off to conduct her next production with him.

It was a simple example of using energy to transform a moment into a memory.

Take what you have to work with and make it into something more.

And my biggest takeaway is that we followed along without any second thought.

Her energy started a band in 30 seconds.

“Dada, come out in the yard!”

“Aunt Ashie, you stand right here!”

“Mama, you go over here!”

She was the writer, creator, the band leader, and the conductor.

When it comes to being an artist, you create your world for people to share and can transform people’s lives daily.

When it comes to being in the music industry (whatever your job is), you can tell the story of what you are doing in a funny way, a passionate way, a serious way, or whatever way you think is best to fit out from the crowd.

You don’t need 1000 resources to grab control of the room you’re in and make people remember what you’re about.

In your next songwriting session, Zoom call, concert, conversation, or impromptu performance, be intentional about what you want to achieve and bring it to life.

Be the conductor.

See you next Sunday!
