💡✍️ADN #150: A simple tour tactic to turn your show into content

Creating content for social media can be a drag.

Most artists I know dislike it more than they understand its value.

Social media is your free digital billboard.

That said, you don’t have to be salesy when sharing on social media.

In fact, I’d argue that 90% of the time you should just be telling a better story than the rest of the internet.

I’ve written previously about capturing what you’re up to anyway, and today I’m going to give you a specific way to do just that.

Go to Amazon and order a Zoom recorder ($100 to $400).

Every night on tour, ask the front-of-house engineer if you can set it up and capture the mix from their board (the same applies if you have your own front-of-house engineer).

Every night you capture a stereo mix or multitrack blend of every gig you play.

These recordings become your daily, weekly, or monthly drops to your audience.

They provide you with content to share on social media, driving fans to join your email list or fan club (I’ll show you how in a second.)

You could partner with a live streaming platform like NUGS and start cross-marketing your live shows to their audience.

Suddenly, you’ve turned your investment into a magnet for audience excitement, increased engagement, and opened up new ways to monetize you’re efforts without feeling salesy.

BONUS IDEA:

To enhance this, consider setting up at least one camera (this could be an iPhone on a tripod to start) in the front-of-house area and pairing the audio and video together after each show.

  • Take the best 30 seconds from each night, post it on social media.
  • Drop a link to “watch more” on that post.
  • Link that to your email list or fan club.
  • Include a call-to-action in your email or fan club sign-up that states fans will receive exclusive live content when they join.
  • Select the top songs from each show and create live EPs that you share exclusively with your email list or fan club.
  • Take the full-length live video and audio and host them on a discovery platform like NUGS.

You’ve turned your experience in one city into something the whole world can now discover.

Let your hard work (touring) do the even harder work (social media) for you.

See you next Sunday,

Neil
